Suggestion is simple:
How about player to be able to press M button and view full race map with current positions of racers on it?
Sometimes it's really good to know whether you are way ahead\behind the opponent so that you'd know whether you should concentrate on the road or can relax a little bit. The best example, perhaps, is Ambassador Ridge, where things can change quickly, but yet you don't often see your opponent on the map duo to long straight parts of the map.
